After Developing the Graduation Photo, an Extra Person Appeared in the Back Row—No One in the Class Recognized Him

There is a type of story on campus about group photos.

It is said that at a certain school, on graduation day, the whole class took a group photo in front of the teaching building. A few days later, when the photos were developed, the class monitor counted heads against the roster one by one, counted twice, and always found one more person than there were in the class.

Standing at the edge of the back row was a person wearing a school uniform, head bowed, half their face obscured by the shoulder of a student in front. Every student looked at the photo, but no one recognized him. Some said he was from another class, others said he was just passing by, but when they asked around, no one from the other classes admitted it either.

There are two most common endings. One is that the homeroom teacher took a look, remained silent for a while, and said, “Someone has stood in this spot on graduation photos from previous years too.” The other is that, a few years later at a class reunion, someone pulled out the photo and found that the person’s face was becoming clearer and clearer.

Every school has a version of this story—the names, times, and teaching buildings are all different, and no one can specify the exact class and year.

The photographer’s explanation is simple: group photos often have passersby, double exposures, or perhaps someone just mistook two students’ faces for three people. But once night study hall ends and the dorm lights go out, no one is willing to mention these words.
