"The Shining" was written by Stephen King after staying one night at a hotel

In the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, USA, there is a white old hotel called the Stanley, built in 1909 by a man who owned a car company. It is a wooden building with a red roof, and behind it are snow-covered mountains.

At the end of October 1974, a couple drove here. They were just looking for any place to stay, but when they arrived they found that the hotel was closing the next day for the winter. They were the only guests left in the whole building. The man was Stephen King, who was not very famous then and had written two novels. The front desk put them in Room 217.

That night at dinner, the restaurant was empty except for their table, and a recording of a band was playing on the loudspeaker. He later recalled that the feeling was of a huge, magnificent thing slowly closing its eyes. A coiled fire hose hung on the wall of the corridor, and he glanced at it as he passed.

That night he had a dream: his three-year-old son was running in the corridor, a fire hose was chasing him like a snake, and he could never catch up. When he woke up, he was drenched in sweat. He left the room, stood on the balcony smoking, and looked at the mountains. By the time he finished one cigarette, he had roughly worked out a story in his mind: a family, winter, a snowed-in empty hotel, a father slowly going mad bit by bit.

This became the later novel "The Shining", published in 1977. In 1980, Kubrick adapted it into a film, but it was shot in a British studio, with exterior locations at another mountain hotel in Oregon. The Stanley Hotel did not appear in the movie. King himself did not particularly like that film. In 1997, he personally produced the TV version, which was filmed at the Stanley Hotel this time.

Now, Room 217 is the most popular room in the hotel, booked solid all year round, and the price is higher than other rooms. The hotel itself claims that there is the spirit of a female housekeeper from the early twentieth century in that room. Some guests say they heard piano music at night, while others say they heard nothing. The hotel later planted a hedge maze in the courtyard, and every winter, snow presses down on it.
