There's an "incident" that has circulated online for many years, saying that one day in 1992, it rained heavily in the Forbidden City, and tourists were taking shelter from the rain. Suddenly there was thunder and lightning, and several palace maids dressed in Qing dynasty clothing appeared by the red wall, walking along it. Tourists took photos of them, and there was even a video.

Later, some "experts" came forward to explain, saying the palace walls are red and contain iron tetroxide. When lightning strikes, the wall acts like a videotape, "recording" people who passed at that moment, and the next time there's lightning, it can "play" them back. This idea was featured in a British TV drama in 1972 called "The Stone Tape", which said that the stones of old houses can record intense emotions and play them back over and over.

However, no one has ever produced that video or those photos. Reposted articles all say "it used to be searchable, but now it can't be found". Later, some architectural scholars rebutted: the walls of the Forbidden City have been painted over many times; even if they contained iron tetroxide, it would have been covered long ago. Physicists also said there is no experimental evidence that a wall can store images.

In October 2015, the Palace Museum publicly responded to such rumors for the first time, saying that people who have worked in the Forbidden City throughout history have never seen or experienced any paranormal events; those stories were just hearsay, embellished and fabricated. At that time, they were opening up a large area in the west, saying that once opened, these rumors would collapse on their own.

Half of the palace is still not open to casual entry, so the rumors naturally won't stop. No one can say anything about that rain in 1992—what the photographer's name was, which magazine published it—but by the red wall, every year there are still tourists who stand specifically in thunderstorms, holding up their phones and waiting.
