“Oran Medan”: Everyone died on the deck, facing the sky, with expressions of terror

This is a widely circulated ghost ship story.

According to online accounts, it was 1947, though some say 1948, near the Strait of Malacca, where two American merchant ships simultaneously received a distress signal in Morse code: "All officers, including the captain, are dead, possibly everyone is dead." A moment later, the code came through a few more words: "I am dying."

After that, silence.

The two ships followed the signal and found the vessel, named the "Ourang Medan." They rowed a small boat aboard; the ship was very quiet. Crew corpses lay on the deck, all face-up, eyes open, mouths agape, hands reaching toward the sky, their faces etched with extreme terror, as if they had seen something horrifying before death. Even the ship's dog was dead, baring its teeth.

No wounds, no signs of a struggle, no blood.

Some versions add that those who boarded felt the air in the cabins was unnaturally cold; though it was tropical seas, it felt like an ice cellar. They prepared to tow the ship back to port, but just as they secured the towline, smoke billowed from the cargo hold and it caught fire, soon exploding. The rescuers hurriedly jumped back to their own ship, and not long after, the "Ourang Medan" sank beneath the waves.

The story appeared in several magazines and newspapers in the 1950s and spread around the world. Some speculate the ship was carrying illegal chemicals that seawater seeped into, releasing toxic gas; others say carbon monoxide leaked from the boiler; still others claim it was aliens.

Later, researchers seriously sought evidence: ship registration records, insurance archives, the names of rescue ships, news from that year—not a single one could be found. The two American rescue ships also could not be traced. Most researchers believe the story is fabricated, or stitched together from other maritime disasters with exaggeration added.

Yet its image is simply too clear: a ship drifting on the open sea, a ring of bodies lying on the deck, all gazing up at the same patch of sky.
