Between Venice and the Lido, in the lagoon, there is a small island called Poveglia, only a few hectares, overgrown with grass and wild trees, with a red-brick bell tower on the island and an abandoned hospital where no one lives.

This story has circulated for many years, but Italian historians say they have found no archives matching this doctor.

In 2014, Italy's state property department wanted to lease Poveglia for a term of 99 years. At that time, there was an online campaign called "Poveglia Belongs to Everyone," where several hundred people pooled money to buy the island, prevent development, and keep it as it was. In the end, the highest bidder at the auction was a Venetian merchant named Luigi Brugnaro, who bid about 510,000 euros, saying he wanted to turn the island into a resort. The following year, he became the mayor of Venice.

To this day, the island remains abandoned. Those who want to go can only take a small boat around to the shore, take a distant look at that bell tower, and officially landing on the island is not allowed.
