Enfield's Two Girls, Furniture Moving on Its Own at Home

In the summer of 1977, in a place called Enfield north of London, a single mother lived with her four children in an ordinary government housing unit, at 284 Green Street. One night at the end of August, strange things began to happen in the house.
First came knocking on the walls. The children said the bed was shaking, and furniture was sliding slowly across the floor as if being pushed. The mother went upstairs and saw a wardrobe moving forward. She went over and pushed against it with all her might, but it wouldn't budge. Terrified, she took the children and ran out of the house, calling the neighbors, who also heard the knocking. The neighbors called the police, and a female officer who arrived later said she saw a chair sliding across the floor by itself, untouched by anyone.
The story made the newspapers, and the Society for Psychical Research in Britain sent people—a man named Grosse and one named Playfair. They stayed there on and off for nearly two years, recording audio and taking photos. The most famous recording features an 11-year-old girl named Janet speaking in a hoarse voice, claiming to be an old man named Bill who died in that house, sitting in a chair downstairs and passing away in his sleep. There were other male voices on the recording, question and answer, as if two people were talking.
The most famous photo shows Janet suspended in mid-air, her hair flying, as if something had thrown her out. It was taken by a photographer from the Daily Mirror, who crouched in the children's room and kept shooting, taking several pictures in a row, with Janet's body higher in each one. Skeptics said she was just jumping on the bed and the shutter happened to catch her at the highest point. Even an expert who was present at the time later said he felt the girls were just playing around, and some of it was staged by themselves.
The two girls later admitted that some of it was them messing around—for example, the old man's voice was something they practiced themselves, and they had a hand in some of the furniture moving. But they also said that other things were not done by them.
The story was later made into the movie The Conjuring 2, and the story in the movie is much tighter than the real events. The mother from back then lived in that house until her death.
So, whether it was real or not, over the decades, neither side has convinced the other. That house is still standing.
