西班牙加利西亚的“死人队”:看见了,就得替他们举蜡烛

In Galicia, in northwestern Spain, there is a terrifying legend called the "Santa Compaña," meaning "Holy Company."

At night, a procession appears on the road: people dressed in white robes, each carrying a lit candle, walking slowly. There are no footsteps, no voices, only a cold air and the smell of burning candles. They are not the living, but the souls of the dead—some say souls who have not yet atoned for their sins. Every time the company appears, it means someone in the village will soon die.

At the very front of the procession is a living person. He carries a large cross in his arms and a bucket of holy water in his other hand, leading the way with vacant eyes and a pale face, like a sleepwalker, not looking left or right. This position is not one he chooses; he is "chosen": if someone walking at night encounters the company and fails to move aside in time, the leader will hand him the cross and take his place.

From that night on, he becomes the new leader. Every night he is taken out to walk dozens of miles with the company, returning home in the daytime. He sleeps poorly, grows thinner and paler day by day, without strength or the ability to speak. He must do this for life, unless he meets someone on the road to whom he can pass the cross.

So the elders of Galicia say: if you are on the road at night and hear distant bells or see a faint string of light in the distance, move away immediately and do not stand and watch.

There are several ways to hide: draw a circle on the road, then draw a cross inside it, step into the circle, make no sound, and wait for the company to pass; or lie face down on the ground and do not look up.

This legend is still told in Galicia today, and has been turned into stories and films.
