In the small town of Thirsk in North Yorkshire, England, there is a small museum that displays a chair. The chair is hung high on a wall, about two meters off the ground; you have to look up to see it.
It is a very ordinary oak chair, called "Busby's Stoop Chair" / "Busby's Death Chair". The legend goes like this: In 1702, there was a man nearby named Thomas Busby. His father-in-law, Daniel Ottey, was the richest man in the area, and his family was involved in counterfeiting. One day, the two men argued in a tavern, and Busby later killed his father-in-law, was caught, and sentenced to death by hanging. Before the execution, he made a final wish: to go to the tavern he frequented most and have a drink. He sat in his own chair, finished his drink, and told those present: whoever sat in this chair from then on would die.
After he was hanged, his body was hung on the gibbet at the crossroads, and that crossroads has been called "Busby's Stoop" ever since. The tavern also changed its name to Busby's Stoop Inn, and that chair remained inside.
According to the legend, the first person to sit in it was a chimney sweep, who died not long after. After that, every few years, someone would retell the story. During World War II, there were several Royal Air Force airfields nearby, and pilots often went to the tavern to drink. Some out of curiosity sat in the chair, and later did not return from their missions; it is said that dozens of people died in total. The tavern owner finally made up his mind to lift the chair up and hang it on the wall, so no one could sit in it.
In 1978, the chair was sent to Thirsk Museum, on the condition that: the chair must be hung up and cannot be placed on the floor.
In this legend, several key points lack contemporary records, such as the names of those pilots. Some people who have seen the chair say it does not look like something from before the eighteenth century. But the museum dare not move it; staff say that among the visitors, someone always asks: "Can I sit in it?" The answer is only one word: No.
