On the night roads of Central America, there are two big dogs, one black and one white

In Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and surrounding areas, elders warn those who must walk at night: if a big dog follows you on the road, do not be afraid, first check what color it is.

Locals call this dog “Cadejo.” It is much larger than an ordinary dog, with coarse fur, a hint of red light in its eyes, hooves like a goat’s, and it walks without sound. They come in two types: white and black.

The white Cadejo is good, a guardian. Legend says it specifically protects those who return home late, especially those who are drunk and staggering down the road. If a person falls by the roadside at night, it will lie beside them, guarding them until dawn; if someone gets lost, it will walk ahead and lead them home. Some elders say its eyes are gentle, and it carries a faint fragrance.

The black Cadejo is the exact opposite. It is an incarnation of a demon, smelling of sulfur, with red eyes, and it barks at people. If it follows someone, that person will feel dizzy, get lost, be led to the edge of a cliff, the riverbank, or even die on the road. Locals say those most likely to be targeted by the black dog are men who have been drinking and running wildly on the road.

Some say the white and black ones are mortal enemies. When they meet, the two dogs will fight on the road, fighting from night until dawn. Villagers living by the road can hear the sounds of tearing and biting through the walls.

In some versions, if a black dog approaches you at night, do not run, do not look into its eyes, and do not make a sound; just keep walking forward, because at this time, the white dog may already be on its way from not far away.
