Hawaii's Night Marchers: When You Hear the Drums, Lie Flat on the Ground

Hawaiians have a legend called the "Night Marchers."

On certain nights, especially during the new moon when the moon is very dark, along some ancient trails, a line of shadows will be walking. They are dead ancient chiefs and warriors, carrying torches, beating drums, blowing conch shells, heading toward the sea or returning from the sea.

This path is the path they walked in life; now ghosts walk it. If there is a house on the road, they pass straight through it. Some old houses in Hawaii have doors and rear windows facing exactly this path; some say it is best not to leave them open at night.

If you encounter them, elders say, do not look, do not run, and do not make a sound. Take off your hat, lie face down on the ground, and remain motionless. If there is your ancestor in the procession, he will recognize you and let you pass.

If you look, it is said you will die.

Hawaiian construction companies sometimes invite local elders to inspect a piece of land before building to see if it lies on the "Night Marchers'" path. Hawaiian law also requires an assessment of the impact on local culture before development, and some projects have therefore changed their routes.
