The Queen of the Southern Sea of Java: She Loves Green, and She Loves Taking Away Those Who Wear Green

· TheMyths Society President

South of Java Island in Indonesia, there is a sea that the locals call the "South Sea," where the waves are huge and someone is swept away here all year round. Legend has it that there is a queen there named Nyai Roro Kidul, who rules over the entire ocean.

She is a beautiful woman who wears green clothes. Legend has it that she had dealings with the kings of Java throughout history, and every king had to "marry" her for her to bless the kingdom. The Sultan of Yogyakarta sends people with offerings to the southern seaside every year to present gifts to her.

So tourists who go to the southern coast of Java to play are reminded by locals: do not wear green clothes into the sea, she will think you are one of her people and take you away.

There is a hotel by the seaside called Samudra Beach Hotel, where Room 308 has fresh flowers and cosmetics placed in it all year round, her portrait hangs on the wall, it is not rented out to the public, and is reserved especially for her. Many Indonesians who go there will offer flowers and pray outside the room.

Every year, fishermen by the seaside still hold a ceremony to place offerings into the sea, asking her to bless safe voyages.

It is said that no one in the hotel dares to touch that room.
