In Korean legend, when a person dies, three people come to collect them, called “messengers of the netherworld,” or sometimes “yin chai.”

They are all male, dressed in black hanbok, wearing black gat hats, with very white faces and no expressions, entering houses without making a sound. Their task is to take the dead person's soul to the netherworld, using chains when doing so.

According to legend, right after someone passes away, the family will set a small table at the door, placing three bowls of rice, three pairs of straw sandals, and a few copper coins, offering them to the yin chai, asking them to treat the deceased well on the road, not to rush too much, and to take them more easily. This custom is called “messenger's meal,” and some places still preserve it today.

In 2016, a very popular Korean TV series wrote this black-clad man into a handsome and slightly goofy character, wearing a black trench coat, and he became instantly popular, with many people going online to check whether “messenger's meal” is real or fake.

Korean elders say it is real, just that there are fewer now. In some families, on the day of the funeral, they will still put a small table at the door, except there is an extra cup of soju on the table.
