There is a legend in Bangkok that almost everyone in Thailand knows, called "Nang Nak" or "Nak of Phra Khanong".

The story goes like this: a couple, the husband named Mak, the wife named Nak, Nak was pregnant. Her husband was conscripted to go to war, and Nak suffered a difficult labor at home, dying together with the child in her belly.

When Mak returned from the war, Nak was waiting at the door to welcome him, holding the child, with dinner prepared, everything as if nothing had happened.

The villagers kept reminding Mak: your wife is dead, what you see is a ghost. Mak didn't believe it, saying they were lying. Some villagers wanted to remind him, but were said to have been scared to death by Nak.

Until one day, Nak was cooking in the kitchen, a lemon rolled from the table into a gap in the floorboards. She didn't bend down, but directly stretched out an arm, reaching under the floorboards to pick it up. Mak saw it, and only then understood. He was so scared he ran out of the house and hid in a temple.

Nak chased him for a long time. Finally, a very famous high monk collected her soul into a ceramic jar and threw it into the river.

This is a story that has been passed down for over a hundred years, adapted into many movies and TV series. Today, in a temple in Bangkok, there is a shrine enshrining Nak, with people coming to worship all year round. Many go to pray for safety, and pregnant women go to pray for an easy delivery. The shrine is filled with children's toys and women's clothes. When Thai men reach the conscription lottery, some also go to that shrine to pray to her, asking her to let them draw the number that exempts them from military service.

The woman who waited for her husband to return home eventually became the guardian deity of many families.
