Aomori's Sugi Village, everyone was supposedly killed overnight

Japan has a well-known "vanishing village" called Sugi Village, deep in the mountains of Aomori Prefecture.
The legend goes like this: long ago, a villager suddenly went mad and one night killed everyone in the village, then committed suicide. Since then, the village was abandoned and erased from maps. At the entrance to the village there is a stone monument, and on the trees by the roadside, things are said to be hanging; at midnight, you can still hear people talking.
In the 1990s, Japanese TV and magazines heavily reported that someone had seen the village with their own eyes; some who went in never came back, and those who did return were out of their minds. Later, many adventure enthusiasts actually drove up the mountain. The legend added conditions for entering the village: you must enter via a certain path, at a certain time, carrying certain things.
The Aomori local government and residents say it's made up; checking old maps and household registries, there has never been such a village. The locals are indeed annoyed to death by young people coming and going—someone drives up at night, throws trash, shouts, even destroys things by the roadside—and the local police have to stand guard at the mountain road entrance.
Such villages exist all over Japan: not on maps, no household registration, no living relatives, only a rumor, a stone monument, and a mountain road no one dares to go on at night. Some feel this is not a ghost story, but the last "unseen place" in everyone's imagination.
