The one called Zuoyang on Tianya played horror games one by one

On the evening of February 20, 2005, someone on Tianya Lianpeng Guaihua posted a thread with the ID Zuoyang; the title roughly meant “Personal experiences with several so-called horror games.” The day before, he had only posted the rules, saying he had contacted three people and would post the results the next day.
The game he wanted to play was called the Four Corners Game. Four people, lights off at midnight, in a rectangular empty room with nothing in it, one person standing in each corner facing the wall. One person walks to the next corner and taps the shoulder of the person in front; the person tapped then walks to the next corner. If you reach a corner with no one there, cough once first, then keep walking. As you walk, there will be a round where no one coughs, every corner has someone, yet someone is still walking. Who the extra person is, no one can say.
The next day he turned in his assignment. The three brothers were all on the night shift at the same unit; he himself used to work there too, but was fired for cursing his direct superior. They got off work at midnight, went out for drinks, and arrived at a buddy's house after one o'clock—a sixty-plus square meter apartment where they usually liked to hang out. When the lights went out, the few people who had been laughing and joking just moments before suddenly all fell silent.
Halfway through the first round, someone screamed. When the lights came on, they discovered someone had already gone to the bathroom, so only three people were actually walking that round, but someone still walked into an empty corner and screamed in fright. Later he found a girl to play with. When she walked back to the corner where she started, she said there was someone there. Afterwards he pondered it for a long time and said he leaned towards it being an illusion: he had told her the rules of the game and what was supposedly going to happen beforehand; once the lights went out, people under great pressure in total darkness would fabricate things that weren't there. He added one more sentence: this was just his guess, and if asked for a definite answer, he could only say “I don't know anything.”
On March 15, he replied one last time, saying everything was fine and thanking everyone for their concern. Then he was gone.
Three years and eight months later, in 2008, this ID came back once. People kept asking him whether what he wrote back then was true, and he said it was true, and that “I also paid a painful price for my ignorance back then.” He said his family used to have a small but profitable company, and later lost everything.
The last sentence I copied verbatim: “As for gods and souls, you can choose never to believe in them, but never blaspheme or disrespect them!”
Back then he said it was an illusion; three years later he said he paid a price. He explained neither statement. What exactly happened, he never wrote, and he never logged back into Tianya afterward.
