Mary King's Street beneath Edinburgh, Someone Put Toys in Little Girl 'Annie's' Room

Edinburgh's Old Town is built on a ridge, with one great street running from the castle to the palace. On both sides of the street are many narrow lanes, which Edinburgh people call 'closes'. One of them is called Mary King's Close, named after a widow of a merchant who lived there in the 17th century.

The most special thing about this street is that it is now underground. In the 1750s, Edinburgh wanted to build a new Royal Exchange, which is today's City Chambers. But the site was a slope, difficult to build on, so workers demolished several floors of houses above the close, laid foundations on the remaining lower levels, and built the new building on top. The street was not filled in, just covered over, and remained there. Later, people still lived on the ground floor; some used it as a warehouse, others as a workshop.

There is a legend about it: when the plague came in the 17th century, the city government sealed off the entire street, locking the sick inside to die. Historians say there is no material to confirm this. The plague did kill many people in Edinburgh in 1645, and some districts were quarantined, but no record has been found of sealing off an entire street.

In 1992, a Japanese medium named Aiko Miyano came to Edinburgh to film a TV program and entered this street. She stood in a small room for a long time, saying there was a little girl, eight or nine years old, named Annie, covered in dirt, crying alone, saying she couldn't find her doll.

After the medium returned to Japan, she bought a doll and sent it back to Edinburgh, placing it in that room. After the story spread, visitors also began to leave things there: candies, stuffed animals, toy cars; some people left a coin.

Starting in 2003, this underground street opened to tourists, with guides in old-fashioned clothing leading people from room to room. 'Annie's Room' is the place where the most people stop on the whole street; toys pile up layer by layer in the corner, stacked very high, and every so often staff clear away a batch.
