Amityville Horror House: Homeowner Admits the Book Was Made Up While Drinking

In Amityville, Long Island, New York, at 112 Ocean Avenue, there is a Dutch Colonial house, three stories high, with two half-round windows upstairs that look like eyes. It was once very famous, and more than a dozen movies have been made about it.

In the early morning of November 13, 1974, a murder took place in this house. Twenty-three-year-old Ronald DeFeo Jr. took a rifle and shot dead his sleeping parents and four younger brothers and sisters. The following year, he was sentenced to six life terms.

In December 1975, a family surnamed Lutz bought the house and moved in. The house was cheap because of the murder. There were five of them: a husband and wife and three children. They stayed a total of 28 days before fleeing. They said there was a foul smell in the house, swarms of flies in winter, green slime oozing from the walls, household items moving on their own, and the little daughter said she saw a pig with red eyes. The husband was woken up every night at 3:15 a.m., which was exactly the time the previous murders occurred. Once, they found hoof prints in the snow.

In 1977, author Jay Anson wrote their experiences into a book called "The Amityville Horror," which became a bestseller and was later adapted into one movie after another.

However, the killer's defense attorney later said in an interview that back then he and the Lutz couple drank many bottles of alcohol together and made up this horror story in order to make money and to find an explanation for the killer's case. The families who moved in afterward did not encounter anything. They even changed the style of the windows so as not to be disturbed by tourists.

The Lutz family insisted until their deaths that what they said was true.
