In 1931, a cargo ship called the Baychimo set sail from a port in northern Canada, carrying a load of furs on its return journey. It was a ship of the British Hudson's Bay Company, and in the waters north of Alaska, it struck drift ice and became trapped.
The captain and crew waited for several days, but the ice did not melt, and the ship was squeezed bit by bit by the ice. They had no choice but to abandon ship, set up a wooden shed on the ice, and lived there for a while before being picked up by planes in batches. Everyone thought the ship would be crushed by the ice. But after a blizzard, the ship disappeared.
A few days later, an Inuit hunter saw it on the distant sea, having drifted forty or fifty miles from its original position. The furs were still on board, the hull was intact, but there was no one.
Company personnel went back to find it, boarded the ship, and intended to unload the cargo. But the wind and snow came again, and they had to leave once more, and the ship drifted away again.
Over the following decades, the ship appeared like a ghost, time and time again, on the waters north of Alaska. Fishermen, hunters, and explorers all claimed to have seen it. In 1933, a group of people boarded it and were trapped by a blizzard on the ship for ten days before managing to escape. Others tried to tow it back to shore, but never succeeded.
1969 was the last time anyone reported seeing it, in the ice off the coast of Alaska, thirty-eight years after it had been abandoned.
After that, no one ever saw it again. As to where it sank and when, no one knows. Some speculate that it may still be in the ice, buried; others say it sank long ago, and those later sightings were of something else.
This ship is one of the longest-drifting "ghost ships" in recorded history.
