"Mountain of Light" Diamond: Legend Says Men Who Hold It Will Meet Misfortune, Only Women Can Wear It Safely

On the crown of the British royal family, there is a very large diamond called the "Mountain of Light".

This stone was unearthed in India, passed down for several hundred years, and changed hands many times: Mughal emperors, Persian kings, Afghan rulers, Sikh princes, and finally taken by the British, set into the royal crown.

Along the way, the men who possessed it mostly met bad ends. Some were killed, some were deposed, some had their eyes gouged out, some lost their kingdoms. Thus came a saying: whoever owns this stone owns the whole world, and will also know all the misfortunes in the world; only gods, or women, can wear it without trouble.

So the British royal family is very particular: this diamond is only set in the queen consort's crown, and the king does not wear it.

However, some historians point out that this "curse" was written by nineteenth-century British people, and earlier Indian and Persian records contain no such words.

In other words, perhaps the stories of misfortune came first, and then someone strung them together into a single thread. That stone is still in London today, with people queuing every day to see it through glass.
