In the early 1990s, a story circulated in central and southern Taiwan: someone caught a fish by a stream in Gangshan, Kaohsiung, and that fish spoke. Others say the location was Lantan in Chiayi, which is another version.

The most common version is this: someone caught a strange fish that wouldn't bite for half a day. When it finally came ashore, the fish's face looked like a human face—eyes, nose, mouth, all complete, and its mouth opened and closed. He was terrified, but dared not throw it away, fearing something would happen. After returning home, he grilled the fish.

The more legendary extended version goes like this: he grilled the fish until cooked, pulled open the fish's body, and inside was revealed the face of an old woman, who asked him in Taiwanese: "Does the fish meat taste good?"

The subsequent plot is always "people who ate the fish had accidents one after another." Some say the whole family fell ill one by one; some say the person who caught the fish never appeared again.

Later, someone made this legend into a movie called "Human Face Fish: The Red-Clothed Girl Spinoff," connecting the human-faced fish with the legend of "The Red-Clothed Girl." The Red-Clothed Girl is another famous Taiwanese supernatural legend from 1998, about an extra girl in red clothes appearing in a suburban outing video.

However, one point is that this legend, from beginning to end, never left the name of the "person who caught the fish," nor any specific day or newspaper.

In a legend, everything exists, except for a person who can be found.
