The Story of the Pisces Jade Pendant, once dubbed "the foremost of China's Top Ten Mysterious Legends", began with a post on Tianya.
The earliest version roughly went like this: during the Cultural Revolution, a batch of wandering, mentally deranged lunatics were found near Lop Nur, called "sand dwellers". They were agitated, and died suddenly not long after. Autopsies revealed they had eaten a toxic plant, and some had their internal organs in reversed positions, called "mirror people". Later it was said that a Pisces Jade Pendant from ancient Loulan could duplicate a person, and that the duplicate was a mirror image.
This also dragged in a real person, scientist Peng Jiamu. In June 1980, he indeed went missing during an expedition in Lop Nur: at the time the team was short of water, he left a note saying "I've gone east to find a well", and walked out alone. Afterwards many people and many planes searched for a long time, but never found him. The post said he was duplicated by the jade pendant into two, so they had to say he went missing publicly.
After that, the story kept having things added: one Peng Jiamu went to the Han Dynasty and became Wang Mang; finally a nuclear bomb blew Lop Nur clean. Every netizen stuffed in a plot they wanted to see.
Later someone wrote a paper specifically studying it, saying this was "collective creation" by netizens. Someone on Douban put it quite bluntly: the original Tianya post was originally fairly credible, the more it spread the more outrageous it became, and by the time it reached Kaixin.com it was unwatchable.
Peng Jiamu's whereabouts remain an unsolved mystery to this day. The real person, no one ever asked him again which direction he actually went. That jade pendant, on the other hand, no one has ever produced.
