There is a small town in the Czech Republic called Kutná Hora. In a cemetery on the edge of the town, there is a small chapel. Once inside, everything you see is white.

Those are bones. On the walls, the pillars, and the ceiling, human bones have been stacked into crosses, wreaths, coats of arms, and pyramids. In the center of the chapel hangs a large chandelier, every part of it—including the sockets and ornaments—made of human bone. It is said that every type of bone in the human body was used.

This ossuary holds the remains of about forty to seventy thousand people.

The story goes like this: at the end of the thirteenth century, the abbot of the local monastery brought back a handful of soil from Jerusalem and scattered it in the cemetery. From then on, the cemetery became one of the most famous graveyards in Europe, and many people wanted to be buried there after they died. One after another, the graveyard soon filled up. Then the Black Death of the fourteenth century and the wars of the fifteenth century came, and tens of thousands of dead were buried here.

The graveyard could no longer hold them, so the old bones were dug up and piled in the chapel's basement. In 1511, a half-blind monk began to sort and stack these bones.

By the nineteenth century, a local noble family hired a carpenter named Rint to arrange these bones. He spent several years making them into what they look like today, and used bones to spell out that noble family's coat of arms on the wall, as well as his own signature.

Now, hundreds of thousands of people visit every year. They walk in, look up, and see that chandelier, hanging in the middle of the chapel, swaying quietly.
