Philadelphia Experiment: In 1943, a warship disappeared and reappeared

This story is well known in UFO circles, called the "Philadelphia Experiment."

The story goes like this: In October 1943, the U.S. Navy conducted a secret experiment at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, intending to use Einstein's theory to make a destroyer "invisible" to evade enemy radar. The warship was called the USS Eldridge. When the experiment began, green light appeared around the ship, and the entire ship disappeared; a few minutes later, it appeared at Norfolk Harbor hundreds of kilometers away, and then returned to Philadelphia.

Some of the sailors on board were fused with the ship's steel, some went mad, and some vanished into thin air and never appeared again. After the experiment, everything was sealed by the Navy, and those involved were required to keep it secret.

The source of this story is a book about UFOs published in 1955, by an author named Morris K. Jessup. Shortly after, he received a strange letter signed by "Carlos Allende", recounting the events above, claiming to be an eyewitness. Later, Jessup received several more letters, with others saying that people from the Office of Naval Research had obtained a book, in which three different people had annotated many words in three different colored pens, all about this experiment.

Jessup later died in 1959, by suicide, which added another layer of mystery to this story.

The U.S. Navy later investigated and stated clearly: the Eldridge was commissioned in August 1943, and around October, the ship was conducting sea trials in the New York area and the Atlantic, recorded clearly in the ship's log; it was never in Philadelphia at that time, nor did it ever disappear. The person who wrote the letter later said he made it all up.

A more reasonable speculation is that the story originated from a real technology at the time called "degaussing": during the war, the Navy would degauss the hulls of warships to avoid mines. This process was indeed carried out at the Philadelphia shipyard, evoking the idea of "invisibility."

The U.S. Navy's official statement is: there was no such experiment. In 1984, Hollywood made a movie called "The Philadelphia Experiment," and later made a sequel.
