How to Tell If a Paranormal Video Online Is Real

You come across a “ghost shadow” video on your phone, shared millions of times, with a whole crowd in the comments saying it’s real. How do you judge? These few tips were summarized by netizens, and they work most of the time.

First, find the original uploader. Something that’s been passed through dozens of hands is basically not credible. A genuine original video usually has a posting time, location, and uploader, and often someone in the comments is asking follow-up questions. Many videos that go viral were originally short films made by someone, or movie or ad promos, with the beginning and end cut off, leaving only the scariest few seconds.

Second, look at the footage. If the whole video is low quality and shaky, but the “ghost” part is especially clear—or especially blurry—it was probably added in post-production. If you really captured something, the light, shadows, and noise around it should match.

Third, look at the details. For example, the same shadow appears in different frames with the exact same shape, not changing at all, or the lights and shadows in the background don’t line up with the edges of that figure.

Fourth, search keywords. Take the location, time, names, license plates from the video and search them, and you’ll often find debunking articles showing it was staged, filmed by a crew, or some residential surveillance footage with special effects added.

Fifth, consider what the video is for. Does the account sell anything, leave contact info, ask you to follow or join a group? Many paranormal videos are just for traffic generation—scaring people is just the method.

These can’t guarantee a hundred percent, but many videos claiming to show “ghosts caught on surveillance” have an answer once you apply the first one: check the source, and it’s a clip from a horror movie.

Some say this makes watching paranormal videos boring. Actually, it doesn’t—once you know how they’re made, watching them reveals another kind of trick.
