Under the ground of Paris, there is a very long underground passage, with walls on both sides built of human bones: thigh bones stacked below, row upon row, neatly arranged, with a circle of skulls placed above, pieced into crosses, pieced into hearts.

This story dates back to the 18th century. At that time, Paris's oldest cemetery, called the Cemetery of the Innocents, had been used for almost a thousand years, bodies piled layer upon layer, the cemetery several meters higher than the street, things seeping into the basements of surrounding houses, even the well water smelled foul. In 1780, a wall collapsed and corpse water surged into a neighbor's house, and only then did the government decide to close this cemetery and move all the bones away.

Where to move them? In the southern suburbs of Paris, there was an abandoned quarry, the limestone had been excavated hollow, like a labyrinth. Starting from 1786, every night, carriages covered with black cloth carried the bones, followed by a line of priests chanting scriptures, dumping them cart by cart into the vertical shafts of the quarry. This continued for more than twenty years, and later other cemeteries in the city also sent bones there successively. By 1810, an inspector who managed the quarry began to stack these randomly piled bones neatly, making them into what people see today, and then opened them to the public.

It is said that there are a total of six million people inside, several times the population of Paris at that time. On the door lintel of an entrance, a line of French is carved: "Stop! This is the Empire of Death."

In September 2004, Paris police were patrolling underground, and in a tunnel not open to tourists, they discovered a hall: with a projection screen, a projector, a bar, tables and chairs, and even a cooking room, using tapped electricity. This was secretly made by a group of young Parisians, it is said that there were often movie nights inside, and also communal meals. Reports said the police cut off the electricity, and when they came back a few days later, the wires had been reconnected, and a note was placed on the table, reading: Do not look for us.

The underground passage is three hundred kilometers long, only a small section is open to the public, requiring going down more than a hundred steps. Entering without permission will result in a fine, and the Paris police also have a special squad that patrols underground.
