Yoro, Honduras: Raining Fish Every Rainy Season
· TheMyths Society President
There is a small town in Honduras called Yoro, where a very strange phenomenon occurs: every May to July, after a heavy rainstorm, the ground is covered with fish the next morning.
The fish are alive, jumping on the grass, some over ten centimeters long. Locals grab baskets and hurry to collect them, taking them home to fry and eat. This phenomenon is called “fish rain,” and locals say it has been happening for over a hundred years. Every year during this season, there is a special festival called the “Fish Rain Festival,” where everyone parades and eats fish together.
The legend goes like this: in the 19th century, a priest from Spain saw that the local poor had nothing to eat, so he knelt on the ground and prayed for three days and three nights, asking God to give them something to eat. As a result, fish fell from the sky.
Locals say that when the fish rain comes, there are first dark clouds, thunder and lightning, strong winds and heavy rain, lasting for two or three hours. After the rain stops, fish appear on the ground.
Scientists explain that waterspouts suck up fish from the nearby sea, carry them into the air, and when the wind direction changes and the storm arrives, the fish fall down. Similar reports have occurred elsewhere in the world, such as Australia and India.
But locals in Yoro say one thing doesn’t add up: these fish cannot be found in local rivers or lakes, only in the sea, which is over a hundred kilometers away. And it happens every year, right on time, in roughly the same season, yet locals have never seen a tornado.
To this day, there is no answer everyone accepts. Every year when the rainy season arrives, the people of Yoro still go out with baskets early the morning after the rain.
