澳大利亚内陆的旷野里,一团会追车的光

In the Australian state of Queensland's interior, there is a very small town called Boulia, surrounded by hundreds of kilometers of red soil plains that stretch to the horizon. Near the town, there used to be a hotel called the Min Min Hotel.

The story began like this: in 1918, a stockman said that one night near the hotel, he saw a ball of light on the distant plain, following him. He looked back, and the light was behind him; he stopped, and the light stopped too; he walked toward it, and the light retreated. In the decades that followed, similar accounts became more and more common: the light was round, white or yellow-green, hovering not far from the ground, and it would follow cars—speeding up when the car sped up, stopping when the car stopped—and when you drew near, it would retreat, always luring you into the wilderness.

The local Aboriginal people have their own legends about these lights, saying they are the souls of ancestors walking at night.

Scientists have also tried to explain it. One theory is that at night, cold air on the plain creates a layer of air above that is warmer than the air below, and the headlights of distant cars are refracted by this layer of air and carried far away, appearing as a ball of light floating above the ground, called a "mirage."

However, some say that the light has also appeared in places where there are no cars for hundreds of kilometers around. Those things are even harder to explain.

The town of Boulia eventually turned this into a tourist project; there is an exhibition hall in town called "Min Min Encounter," which uses lights and visuals to let visitors experience the feeling of being followed by a light in the wilderness at night.
