Three People in Long Robes Boarded the Last Bus of Route 375, This Post Actually Appeared in 2007

Beijing's public buses have an old story: late at night in November 1995, the last bus of Route 375 departed from the Old Summer Palace terminal. On the way, three people flagged it down, wearing long greatcoats; the one in the middle was being supported, disheveled, head bowed. Beneath the coats, a corner of a Qing dynasty official's robe was visible, and his face was terrifyingly pale.

There was an old lady on the bus who kept staring at them. A few stops later, she made an excuse to get off and pulled the young man next to her off with her. Just as they stepped off, the bus drove away and never returned to the terminal. A few days later, the bus was found by a reservoir more than a hundred kilometers away, with three corpses inside.

This story spread so widely because it was written with so much detail—which stop, what day, even what the old lady said—making it sound real. Many people claimed that a friend's relative had been on that bus.

China News Service investigated it specifically in 2015. Reporters went to the National Library and checked the Beijing Evening News from November 14 to 17 of that year; not a word mentioned a missing bus. Further searching revealed that this post first appeared around 2007. The same story existed with versions attached to Route 330 and 331, just with different route numbers. A Route 375 driver said this line never went to Fragrant Hills, nor did it pass through any Old Summer Palace terminal; the route in the story simply didn't match.

Later, some said that stories of "strangers on the last bus" exist in many cities: change the route, change the terminal, change the three people, and you can tell it all over again.

Remote routes, few late-night buses, dark surroundings—these make them easy material for stories. Even now, people from other places come specially to Beijing to take a night shift Route 375, hoping to see if they'll encounter anything.
