Xinjiang's "Devil City": When the Wind Blows, the Whole City Is Full of Crying
· TheMyths Society President
North of Xinjiang, next to Karamay, there is a desert. As far as the eye can see, there are earth-yellow castles, towers, and streets, high and low, stretching over a large area, like a huge ruined city. Locals call it "Devil City".
Actually, this was blown into shape by the wind. Millions of years ago, this was a lake; later it dried up, exposing the ground, and the rocks were soft and loose. Here, the wind is strong all year round, carrying sand like one knife after another, shaving away the rock bit by bit until it became what it is today. This kind of landform is called "Yardang" in Uyghur, meaning steep earth mounds.
According to legend, devils live inside. Those who enter will get lost, turning around and around, unable to find their way out; everything looks exactly the same in every direction, with no sense of orientation.
Even more frightening are the sounds. When the wind blows, passing through those holes and crevices, it makes "woo-woo" cries, rising and falling, like a woman crying, or like hundreds of people shouting. The older generation says that caravans and herdsmen went in and never came out.
Other places in Xinjiang also have large areas of Yardang landforms; those around Lop Nur are even larger. In 1980, scientist Peng Jiamu disappeared while surveying Lop Nur, and to this day he has not been found.
Now, the scenic area has set up signposts and fences, and tourists are not allowed in at night. Later, someone filmed a movie inside, and some tourists deviated from the route, got lost, and were found by search and rescue teams.
The wind still blows the same way; as soon as evening comes, behind those earthen towers, there are still "woo-woo" sounds.
