Shennongjia Wild Man: In 1976, Was It a Human or a Bear?

There is a place in Hubei called Shennongjia, where the forest area is vast, the mountains are high and the forests dense. For decades, there have been legends of a "wild man."

The most famous incident occurred in May 1976. Several forestry officials were driving on a highway when, in the early hours, they encountered a thing covered in reddish-brown long hair emerging from the woods by the roadside. It stood upright, like a human but not human, about two meters tall, with very long arms and no neck. They said that the thing walked past the front of the car, without dodging or calling out, and slowly disappeared into the woods.

When the news got out, it caused a sensation. In 1977, the Chinese Academy of Sciences organized a large-scale expedition, mobilizing many people, and the army also joined them. They went into the mountains and searched for several months. In the decades that followed, some claimed to have photographed footprints, found hair, and others said they heard calls.

But in the end, no one ever produced a specimen or a bone. Hair sent for testing mostly turned out to be bears, monkeys, gorals, or other known animals. Some speculated that the "wild man" in the legends is a large bear that walks upright and is mistaken for a human. Others believe that people, at night and when afraid, mistake tree shadows or monkeys for monsters.

However, locals have always said that there is something in the deep mountains, only no one can produce evidence.

In 2016, the Shennongjia Forestry District was listed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, its value lying mainly in its primeval forests and the golden snub-nosed monkeys.

So what exactly is the wild man? The conclusion currently found is: no one knows, but people have always been talking about it.
