On October 20, 1967, in a place called Bluff Creek in Northern California, where the mountains were full of old-growth forest, two men rode horses into the mountains to look for traces of Bigfoot. One was Roger Patterson, the other Bob Gimlin.

Patterson later said that they rounded a bend and, on a sandbar by the river, saw a large, hairy creature crouching. Hearing the horses, it stood up and walked away. The horses were spooked, and he fell off his horse, grabbed his camera, and filmed while chasing it, shooting about a minute of film.

This footage remains, to this day, the most famous piece of evidence for Bigfoot. In the images, the thing is covered in black hair, its arms swinging, its shoulders broad. Halfway along, it looked back, then walked into the woods. That glance has been enlarged frame by frame, cropped into countless pictures, printed in books and on T-shirts.

After Patterson and Gimlin returned to town, they developed the film, and soon the whole world knew. The next day, someone went to the site and found footprints, each over forty centimeters long, stretching all the way into the woods; someone made plaster casts of them.

For decades afterward, people have argued. Some special effects artists said the technology of the time couldn't produce such muscle detail; others said it was entirely possible—just a gorilla suit with shoulder pads. In 2004, a man named Heironimus came forward claiming he was the one in the gorilla suit that day; another costume maker said he sold the suit to Patterson. But none of these claims produced an actual suit from that day.

The filmmaker Patterson died of illness in 1972, insisting until the end that it was real. Gimlin, until later, also kept saying that what they saw that day was a real living creature—he saw its face and smelled its odor.

That sandbar now has a sign, and people go there specifically to see it. More than fifty years have passed, and no one has filmed a second clip in the same place.
