The OP stared at the opposite balcony for three months, and that household never turned on the lights

In July 2007, a post appeared on the Tianya Entertainment Gossip board titled "The Household Opposite Seen from My Balcony." The OP was female, and when she posted, she included pictures and text. She apparently didn't intend to scare anyone; she just said she had watched that household for three months, and the more she looked, the more wrong it felt.
She said the opposite building was an old one from the late 80s to early 90s. Other units upstairs and downstairs were occupied, except for the one circled in red. Its balcony was enclosed with several strangely shaped plastic boards, and grass had grown out of the gaps between them. She observed it back and forth for three months, looking three times a day, and the lights had never been turned on. But that area was near the city center, lively yet quiet, and the surrounding houses were easy to sell and rent; logically, it shouldn't be vacant.
Then, a few days ago, she found that the balcony was suddenly tied full of plastic bags, all the same size. She said she hadn't taken any photos before the bags were tied, so she couldn't compare, but she was quite sure they hadn't been there before. There was also a close-up of a kitchen window; that window had looked the same for three months.
The commenters all had different theories. Some said maybe a blind person lived there, so they didn't turn on the lights. Someone zoomed in on the kitchen photo and said there was something standing by the window, like a photograph, wearing a jacket with right-over-left lapels, gender indistinguishable, probably a memorial portrait. The old man made a living collecting scrap; he had died, and the house was full of plastic bags, with no one to deal with them. Others said it was a black-market workshop recycling plastic to make bags, and they enclosed the balcony because they were afraid of being seen. They reminded the OP: you watch them every day; maybe they are watching you through the cracks. Someone else recalled a story from TV about a mother in Northeast China who was mentally unstable and locked her daughter at home for several years; they advised the OP not to just watch but to ask the security guard.
The OP actually went to ask later. The auntie at the small shop said the household was home to a Mr. Chen who did research at a certain unit. The OP asked further and wrote a long paragraph, the gist of which was: Mr. Chen had moved in eight or nine years ago, basically had no contact with neighbors, kept to himself, was home alone during the day, and sometimes only went out at night, wearing a hat and walking with his head down. When neighbors had business and knocked on his door, he wouldn't open it; they could only slip notes through the crack. He had a daughter in Japan and a son in northern China. As for those bags on the balcony, they were supposedly used for his research.
The OP finally wrote that after hearing this, she felt quite melancholy. Researchers truly could endure loneliness, and conversely thinking of herself, she felt ashamed. Below, netizens concluded this story with four words: "Ghosts in the heart."
But what exactly was that standing thing by the kitchen window, and what specific research was Mr. Chen conducting? No one in the post ever clarified.
