Backrooms: Someone posted a photo of a yellow office on a forum, and it spread

The term Backrooms originated in May 2019, on 4chan's paranormal board, where someone posted an image. The image showed an empty office with moldy-looking yellow wallpaper, damp carpet, humming fluorescent lights on the ceiling, and nothing else.

The accompanying text roughly said: If you "noclip" out of reality in the wrong place, you'll end up in the Backrooms. There, there's only the smell of old damp carpet, a maddening monochromatic yellow, the endless buzz of fluorescent lights turned up to maximum, and about 600 million square miles of randomly segmented empty rooms where you'll be trapped forever. If someone hears you and comes looking for you, don't let them find you.

People below kept adding to it; some added different "levels", some drew maps, some wrote rules, some said there were other things walking around inside, and some wrote about people they'd encountered there. Within months, the story snowballed, and eventually someone even wrote a wiki for it, with every level numbered and every monster named.

By 2022, a teenager made a short film on his computer, with footage that looked like 90s old tapes, showing someone walking around an empty yellow office, and it went viral online; later it was adapted into games, with one small team after another making things based on it.

This legend was collaboratively written by the whole internet, with no single author as its "parent". But many people say that when they were children, they seemed to have actually been to that place: an empty room, yellow wallpaper, a loud humming noise, and no one around.
