The "EMF Detectors" on Ghost-Hunting Shows Are Actually Measuring Your Home's Wiring

On ghost-hunting TV shows, an investigator enters a dark room holding a small box with a row of lights ranging from green to red. They call it an electromagnetic field detector: when the lights come on, it means "something" is nearby, because ghosts interfere with electromagnetic fields. When the lights go all the way to red, the camera cuts away and everyone gasps in unison.

This little box really does measure electromagnetic fields. The problem is, it measures electromagnetic fields produced by anything: wires in the walls, outlets, refrigerators, transformers, TVs, streetlights, underground cables, and your phone in your pocket. Your phone rings and the light comes on; you walk alongside the breaker box and the light stays red; turn off the electricity in the room and the light goes out. Buy one yourself, walk around your house, and you'll find that in every room there are a few spots where the light comes on — that's where the wiring runs.

Many old houses have aging wiring and haphazardly routed cables, creating even more chaotic electromagnetic fields. On top of that, investigators always turn off the lights, walk forward in the dark holding the box, and when the light comes on they get nervous, their hands shake, and the readings jump.

Another item commonly used on these shows is called a "ghost box," which is actually a modified radio that rapidly scans through stations, stopping on each for only a fraction of a second. What comes out is a string of fragmented voice snippets — music, commercials, news. The investigator asks inside it: Who are you? After a while, they pick out a single word from the jumble of sounds and say, listen, it answered.

This works on the same principle as the "ghost voices" in recordings mentioned before: the human brain finds meaningful words in noise, especially when you're asking a question.

So if your detector lights up, don't rush to call a Taoist priest first — check if there's wiring inside that wall, or a refrigerator next to it. Most of the time, you'll find the answer there.
