A person in Texas in 1998 said two black-eyed children knocked on his car window, asking for a ride

Black-eyed children is a claim that spread online starting in 1998. It began with a man named Brian Bethel, who posted a letter to a paranormal mailing list describing his own experience that night.
He wrote that it happened in Abilene, Texas, in the parking lot outside a movie theater. He had just bought his ticket and was sitting in his car waiting for the show to start when two children walked up and knocked on his window. They looked about ten years old, one boy and one girl, appearing quite ordinary and dressed cleanly. The children said they wanted to go to a friend's house to get some money; the house wasn't far away, and they asked if they could get a ride.
He said that when the children spoke, they said some very strange things, such as "We can't come in unless you let us in," in a flat tone, as if reciting a line. The scariest part was that both children's eyes were completely black, without any whites. At the time he didn't feel any fear, only an indescribable sense that something was wrong, and a voice in his head shouting: Leave, leave immediately. He stepped on the gas and drove off without even watching the movie. He later said that the fear was irrational and came on extremely quickly.
After the letter was sent, more and more people said they had encountered similar things, in different places and at different times—knocking on car windows or doors, asking to be let in, speaking in much the same tone. Some said the children's skin was pale; others said they seemed to float as they walked. Even now, there are still many people posting such stories.
That letter contained only his own account: no photos, no second witness, and no one who could verify that day's movie theater.
