Offering One Million Dollars to Find a Real Psychic: No One Has Claimed It in 50 Years

There is a magician in the United States named James Randi, nicknamed "The Amazing Randi." His life's work was to expose people who claimed to have supernatural powers: those who could move objects with their minds, bend spoons with their thoughts, communicate with spirits, find underground water, or heal diseases.

Starting in the 1960s, he offered a reward to the public: anyone who could prove they had supernatural abilities under strict conditions would receive money. It started at one thousand dollars and later rose to one million. His foundation kept this challenge open from the 1990s until 2015.

The conditions were simple: both parties agreed on the testing method in advance and signed off on it; the test was conducted face-to-face, without magic tricks or cheating; if successful, you got the cash.

Over the years, more than a thousand people signed up. Some claimed they could move a glass of water with their minds; some said they could find underground water with a forked tree branch; some said they could see the light around other people's bodies; some said they could find missing people with just a photograph.

The testing methods were generally simple. For example, for those who claimed they could find water, Randi's people would bury ten pipes, with only one carrying water, and ask them to point out which one it was on the ground. The result was that no one performed better than random guessing.

In the end, not a single person passed the initial test.

Some people who failed in the test claimed it was because there was an "aura of skepticism" on site that interfered with their abilities. Randi replied: then let's test at your home, you decide how to test, and we will agree to it.

In 2015, the challenge ended. In 2020, Randi passed away at the age of ninety-two. That one million dollars remained in the account, and no one ever took it.
