Mothman: 66 Years Ago, Two Couples Saw Red Eyes Outside an Abandoned Gunpowder Factory

On the night of November 15, 1966, in Point Pleasant, a small town in West Virginia, USA, two young couples were driving past an abandoned gunpowder factory. They said that in the darkness they saw something about two meters tall, with wings, eyes like two red reflectors. As soon as it saw the car, it chased after them; even when they drove at over a hundred kilometers per hour, it was still flying behind them.

The newspaper gave it a name: “Mothman.” In the following year, people in town kept claiming to have seen it. Some said it appeared by the bridge, some said it was crouching on rooftops. The descriptions were all similar: gray, large wings, red eyes.

On December 15, 1967, the Silver Bridge connecting the town to Ohio suddenly collapsed during the evening rush hour. Dozens of cars fell into the river, and forty-six people died.

Later, a writer named John Keel happened to be in town investigating at that time. He connected these two events and wrote a book, claiming that the Mothman was not there to harm people, but to warn them, though no one understood. The book became a bestseller, and later it was made into a movie. The town erected a metal statue and holds a festival every year, with tourists coming from all over.

Skeptics say it was a startled large owl or sandhill crane, and the bridge was indeed poorly maintained. Later investigations found that a small crack in a chain on the bridge had broken. Which one you believe, the townspeople are probably split into two camps.
