In 1951, British mountaineer Eric Shipton photographed a series of very large footprints on a glacier in the Himalayas. Each footprint was much larger than a human's, as if belonging to a barefoot large animal, toes splayed, walking through the snow one step at a time. The photo was published in British newspapers, and from then on, the "Yeti" became a topic of discussion worldwide.

Actually, stories of the Yeti existed locally long before. The Sherpa people call it "Yeti," roughly meaning "beast among the rocks." Members of mountaineering teams often said they heard cries outside the camp at night, and footprints appeared in the snow the next morning. In 1921, when the British first explored the route to Mount Everest, they saw large footprints in the snow, and local guides said they were left by a "wild man." When this reached the newspapers, it was translated as "Abominable Snowman," and that term entered the English language from then on.

In 1954, the Daily Mail sent a large expedition to find the Yeti. They borrowed something said to be a Yeti scalp from a temple and took it back for examination; it turned out to be the skin of a goat-like animal. The temple also had a hand said to belong to a Yeti, which was later quietly smuggled out of the country and returned decades later.

In 2017, an American team took samples claimed to be Yeti body parts preserved in museums and temples around the world for DNA analysis. The conclusion: most were bears, one was a dog, and there was no "unknown primate." They said this likely means the "Yeti" of legend is probably different species of bears in the Himalayas that people mistook.

In 2019, the Indian Army posted a tweet saying their mountaineering team found a series of very large footprints near a mountain, about 80 centimeters long. Netizens immediately got excited, and many experts said footprints in snow can be enlarged by melting and are unreliable.

People are still looking at Shipton's photo to this day. Who left those footprints? More than seventy years later, no one has truly given an answer.
