新墨西哥小镇上有人说夜里一直有个低频的嗡嗡声

There is a small town called Taos in New Mexico. In the early 1990s, some people in town started saying that there was a low humming sound at night, like a diesel engine running in the distance, never stopping. The sound was around 40 hertz, very low; some people couldn't sleep at night, some had headaches or a feeling of pressure in their ears, and they felt better after moving away.

The strangest thing was that only some people could hear it. Later statistics showed it was about two percent. Two people sleeping in the same room—one could hear it, the other heard nothing at all. They would argue, each thinking the other was lying. Some went to ask their neighbors, and when the neighbors said they heard nothing, they thought they were going crazy, but didn't dare tell anyone.

In 1993, the federal government sent people over with instruments to measure things in town for several months, but they didn't find any explainable sound source. Some said it was high-voltage power lines, some said it was a distant mine, some said it was military submarine communications nearby, and some said it was a sound from inside their own ears. Several explanations were proposed, but none held up.

Later, similar things happened in other places. People in Bristol, UK, and Windsor, Canada also reported it, calling it the "hum phenomenon." People in every place described it similarly: very low, very steady, only audible at night, and gone when they changed location.

To this day, no one knows for sure what the sound is. The people in town have gradually gotten used to it: those who can hear it no longer talk about it everywhere, and those who can't hear it no longer argue with them.
