Roswell: In 1947, the military first said it was a flying saucer, then changed their story the next day

In mid-June 1947, in the Roswell area of New Mexico, USA, a rancher named Brazel found a large pile of things on his ranch: pieces like tin foil, rubber, tape, thin wooden strips, scattered over a large area, about two hundred meters long. He picked up some and put them aside, not taking it seriously.
In early July, he went into town and heard that "flying saucers" were being talked about everywhere, so he took the fragments to the local sheriff. The sheriff reported it to the nearby Army Air Force base, and the base sent a Major named Marcel to the ranch to look, and brought back some fragments.
On July 8, the base issued a press release, and the headline in the local newspaper roughly meant: "Army Air Force recovers flying saucer at Roswell ranch". The news spread around the world instantly.
Later that day, a general from Fort Worth, Texas, stepped forward to correct it: it was not a flying saucer, but a weather balloon, holding fragments and posing for photos for reporters. The next day, the headline in the newspaper was changed to "Balloon".
For the following thirty years, no one mentioned it much. Until the late 1970s, Major Marcel from back then came forward to say that what they recovered was not a balloon, "not something from Earth". Since then, various claims have emerged: some said they saw alien corpses, some said they were taken away by the military, and some said that the officers at the time were required to keep it secret.
In 1994, the US Air Force issued a report saying it was "Project Mogul", a high-altitude balloon used to monitor Soviet nuclear tests, which was top secret at the time, so the military could not say. In 1997, another report came out saying that the so-called "alien corpses" were anthropomorphic dummies used for airdrop tests later, the timing differed by several years, and people had mixed up their memories.
Roswell now has a flying saucer museum, holds a festival every July, the streetlights in the city are shaped like alien heads, and even fast food restaurants are built in the shape of flying saucers.
As for what exactly fell on the ranch on that day in 1947, the Air Force report says it was a balloon, some locals believe it, some don't, anyway tourists come every year.
