“蜡烛湾”:论坛里一帮人互相问,小时候是不是都看过那个木偶节目

“Candle Cove” was a very short internet novel written by an American webcomic author in 2009; it is not a true story. But it was written so much like reality that many people believed there really was such a program, so it spread very widely.

The whole piece is a post conversation on a forum. At the beginning, someone asks: Does anyone remember a children's television program from the 1970s called “Candle Cove”? Inside there was a tiny pirate ship, several puppets, one named “Percy” the pirate, one named “Janice” the girl, and a creepy villain called “The Skin-Taker.”

Someone replies, I remember, I remember, that show was too scary, I wanted to hide as soon as I heard the theme song. Someone else replies, I remember, that villain was a puppet with a face like a skull, and his voice was very hoarse.

The conversation gets more and more detailed, and everyone discovers that the details they remember actually match up: the same scene, the same character, even the same lines. Someone remembers a very strange plot where the puppets were talking about a child, holding a knife, and “peeling” his face; what they said was all the same.

Until one person asks their own mother. Their mother thinks for a long time and says, that channel had already stopped broadcasting long ago. What you all sat in front of the TV watching every day was actually a screen full of static.

The whole piece has no narrator, no voiceover, only the exchange of posts. Later, many “internet creepypastas” learned this writing style. A few years later, an American TV station adapted it into a TV series. And quite a few people really went online to look for this program that does not exist at all.

What the snow on the screen and the children back then actually saw inside, no one knows.
