SCP-173: A concrete statue that moves the moment you blink

There is a huge collaborative story online called the "SCP Foundation." The premise is this: there is a secret organization in the world dedicated to containing all manner of inexplicable things. Each thing has a number and a file, and the file describes what it is and how to keep watch over it.

Number 173 is the first and the most famous of them.

The file says: it is a statue, made of concrete, with rebar inside, coated with a layer of spray paint on the outside, about a meter tall, shaped like an abstract person with no facial features.

It has one characteristic: as long as someone is staring at it, it remains motionless; the moment no one is looking at it—even if it's just the blink of an eye—it will move, very quickly, approaching a person from behind to snap or twist their neck. Therefore, the file stipulates that entering its room requires at least three people, who remind each other and take turns blinking one by one, so that it is never left unwatched for a single second.

The file also describes its room: the floor is covered in reddish-brown stains, debris piles up in the corners, and there are scratches on the walls where someone has clawed.

This premise first appeared around 2007 to 2008 on an anonymous forum, where a netizen posted a photo of a sculpture and wrote a few lines. The photo was actually of a sculpture by a Japanese artist. Later, someone moved it to a wiki site, and netizens from around the world took turns writing their own invented "containment object" files. The format was always the same: number, class, containment procedures, description.

Now there are over seven thousand entries on the site. Number 173 remains the most famous one; someone made it into a short film, someone made it into a game, where in the game, players must keep staring at it in the dark, not daring to blink or look away.

It is a fictional story, and everyone knows it. But many people, after reading it, will still stare at something standing in the corner of the room at night for a while before daring to look away.
