1966, Two Bodies Wearing Lead Masks on a Brazilian Hilltop

In August 1966, across from Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, there was a small hill in Niterói called Vintém Hill. A boy flying a kite on the hill discovered two bodies.
Two men, in their early thirties, wearing suits with raincoats over them, despite the scorching heat. They lay on the ground, with two empty water bottles, a pack of bread, some cash, and a notebook beside them. Strangest of all, each wore a lead eye mask on their face, like a mask.
There were no obvious injuries or signs of struggle on their bodies. They had been dead for several days.
The police identified them: they were two electronics technicians, one named Manoel and the other Miguel, who lived in a small town over two hundred kilometers away. Before leaving, they told their families they were going out of town to buy some things.
The notebook had a few lines written in it, roughly saying: 4:30 PM, go to the agreed place; 6:30 PM, swallow the capsules and wait for the metal to protect their faces; then, wait for the signal.
No one understood what those lines meant, nor what the “agreed place” was.
Some said the two men were conducting some kind of experiment; some said they committed suicide; some said they were lured up the hill by some cult; others said it was related to UFOs. The autopsy report did not give a definite cause of death, as the bodies had decomposed, and some records were later lost.
To this day, this case remains one of Brazil’s most famous unsolved mysteries.
