1908年西伯利亚的森林里一声巨响,八千万棵树齐刷刷倒下,却找不到坑

At a little past seven in the morning on June 30, 1908, in central Siberia, Russia, at a place called Tunguska, a light more dazzling than the sun suddenly flared in the sky, followed by a deafening roar. In a small village called Vanavara sixty kilometers away, someone said that while sitting on his porch, a hot wind struck his face, he was blown several steps away, and everything went dark.

The sound carried a thousand kilometers. The ground shook, windowpanes shattered, and even seismographs hundreds of kilometers away recorded a series of fluctuations. The region was sparsely populated, mostly by Evenki hunters and herdsmen, and some said their reindeer herds disappeared in large patches.

It was a long time before anyone went to see it specifically. In 1927, the Soviet mineralogist Kulik led a team, traveling for several months, into that forest. He had expected to see a huge meteorite crater, but there was none. What he saw was a vast expanse of fallen trees; over a range of dozens of kilometers, all the trunks lay in one direction, with their roots pointing toward the center. The trees in the center of the forest, however, were still standing, though all their branches and leaves had been burned off, like so many utility poles.

Later estimates put the number of fallen trees at around eighty million, covering an area of roughly two thousand square kilometers, about the size of a large city. The explosive force was equivalent to several hundred Hiroshima atomic bombs.

For several nights after the event, from Britain to Russia, the night skies over Europe remained bright—bright enough at midnight to read a newspaper in the street. People at the time could not figure out why.

Most scientists today believe it was an asteroid or a fragment of a comet that suddenly exploded at an altitude of five or six kilometers, so there was no crater, only trees knocked down by the shock wave. But for over a century, other theories have never stopped: some said antimatter, some said a micro black hole, and some said an alien spacecraft had an accident.

That forest is now a nature reserve; most of the fallen trees have rotted away, and the trees that have since grown back here grow in generation after generation, very dense.
