On the evening of July 7, 2010, in Hangzhou. That night, many people posted on Weibo and forums saying that something had happened at Xiaoshan Airport, flights were delayed, and the airport was closed, because there was an unidentified flying object in the sky.

Witnesses said that at around nine in the evening, a glowing object appeared in the sky, bright, oval-shaped, slowly turning above the airport. Many people took photos with their phones; the photos in the posts showed either a bright spot or one trailing a light streak.

The airport was temporarily closed for over an hour at the time. More than ten flights were diverted to other cities or circled in the air, and the terminal was packed with passengers waiting to board.

The next day, a local newspaper reported: “Xiaoshan Airport closed due to unidentified flying object.” The internet exploded, with some saying it was aliens and others saying it was a flight performance.

Afterward, the airport and relevant authorities stated that it was due to “air traffic control,” and the closure was to ensure safety. They did not mention UFOs, nor did they state the reason for the control. Later, some experts said it might have been a military exercise that night, using searchlights or illumination flares, or possibly a weather issue. Some people produced photos, saying that the glowing mass was lights near the airport reflected by clouds.

To this day, there has been no official complete explanation of the incident, and it has become the most famous UFO event in China.
