What Did Air Base Personnel See in a British Forest After Christmas in 1980

In the early hours of December 26, 1980, in Suffolk, England, there was a forest next to a US Air Force base stationed in the UK. A sentry at the base saw lights in the forest, thought it was an aircraft crash, and went to check.
They said they saw a glowing triangular object in the woods, hovering above the ground, and the birds and animals around suddenly fell silent. One of the sentries approached and said there were strange symbols on it. Then the thing rose up and flew away.
The next day, they went back to look, and there were three depressions on the ground, and broken branches.
Two days later, Deputy Base Commander Lieutenant Colonel Halt led a group back again, carrying a Geiger counter and recording audio. He wrote in a memo that they saw several red and yellow lights moving in the woods, and later star-like lights in the sky that would shoot beams down to the ground. The memo was titled "Unexplained Lights", addressed to the UK Ministry of Defence, and was only declassified several years later.
Later, some said the lights were from a lighthouse at Orford Ness nearby, flashing every five seconds; someone timed it and said the rhythm of the flashing lights was very similar to the lighthouse. Some said the sentries saw a particularly bright meteor, which people across southern England saw that night; others said the guards were mistaken, and the depressions on the ground were rabbit burrows.
The UK Ministry of Defence's conclusion at the time was that the incident posed no threat to national defense and would not be investigated.
To this day, it remains one of the most famous UFO incidents in the UK, known as "Britain's Roswell", and every year people still go to that forest to walk around, following signs to see that "landing spot".
