Dormitory Headcount at Night, Always One More Person

· TheMyths Society President

This story appears in the Tieba forums of many schools, and every school claims it happened at their own.

The version is roughly like this: In a four-person dormitory, after lights-out, one student gets up in the middle of the night to use the toilet. When they return, they count the beds in the dark. Every bed has someone lying in it, making five in total.

But there are only four people in the dorm.

They dare not speak, dare not turn on the light, and climb back into bed motionless, eyes open until dawn. The next day, they ask their roommates, and everyone says they slept soundly and felt nothing. They dismiss it as a dream and don't take it to heart.

A week later, another student also wakes up in the middle of the night, counts again, finds someone on every bed, and one extra. They tell the others the next day, and the four look at each other, only to realize that everyone has had similar feelings, but no one ever said anything.

They decide not to turn off the lights at night. The lights stay on, and nothing happens that night. Nothing happens the next day, or the third day either.

On the fourth night, someone finds it too bright and turns off the light.

In the morning, the four wake up to find a note beside each person's pillow, all bearing the same name—the name of someone none of them have ever heard of.

Later, they ask an upperclassman. The upperclassman is stunned for a long time and says: Many years ago, this person indeed lived in this dormitory.

Most versions end here. As for what happened to the owner of that name afterward, each school tells it differently: some say they died in the dormitory long ago, others say they were a student who never graduated.

Some explain it psychologically: in the dark, people cannot see clearly, and the brain, based on the assumption that "there is someone on the bed," fills in a shape on its own, making it easy to miscount. But no one can explain those four notes in the dormitory.
